We are continuing to get hammered here on the racecourse, I am sorry to say. Basically we have always been to the east of the fleet, trying to make something happen, but the wind has gone right 70 degrees in the last 3 days. So we have been outside of a huge shift, and the result has not been pretty. It is not so bad when we stay on port jibe, especially when the other guys are on starboard. It looks like you are gaining on the position reports. But then you have to jibe and go across the course, and they jibe and go down tthe course in a header… Well the geometry lesson is obvious for all to see.
On the positive side it is glorious sailing, 18 to 26 knots and big ocean waves. Unfortunately this requires hand steering all the time which is quite tiring. But I keep trying to eat, drink water, take my vitamins, and generally look after myself and the boat. The maneouvers are pretty tiring. We just jibed and it took sabout half an hour start to finish in the 24 kt. breeze. You are pretty spent after that. So you have to chose your jibes carefully!
I am really trying not to get discouraged. We have to get a break here somewhere. We are not sailing the boat too badly now, but the navigation is the overriding factor at the moment. It has been rich get richer and we are poor. Normally there would be a bit of a re- shuffle in the duldrums to look forward to. However at the moment there is very little doldrums, which is good for a fast passage, but bad for making a move to catch up. we just need to keep doing teh best we can and wait for the others to make a mistake. I must sound like a broken record.
We are in the middle of the Cape Verde Islands, although they are so spread out I have not actually seen them yet. This could be the last view of land for a very long time, possibly until New Zealand. There are flying fish everywhere, they are kind of a nuisance really. It is starting to get pretty warm, even at night.
